Cash flow and financial planning software compared: the best tools for companies

For a company’s long-term success, precise financial planning and always up-to-date cash flow planning are the foundation of success and stability. In economically uncertain times in particular, entrepreneurs should have an overview of liquidity, income and expenditure at all times. Digital solutions offer valuable support here and, above all, relief. The market for financial planning and cash flow software is, however, varied and hard to survey. The available tools often differ considerably in their range of functions and set different priorities – from short-term liquidity management through to comprehensive strategic financial planning.
To make it easier for companies to choose the right solution, it makes sense to divide these software solutions into three central areas:
- Planning liquidity and cash flow: software aimed at securing solvency in the short term, helping to monitor cash flows and to identify financial bottlenecks early.
- Financial planning in the narrower sense: financial planning software for the strategic planning of the profit and loss account (P&L) and the balance sheet, providing a sound basis for decisions on long-term corporate strategies.
- Analysis tools: solutions for evaluating company key figures (KPIs), for detailed reporting and for supporting financial decisions.
This structure allows a clear, practical comparison of the most important providers. Based on OMR reviews (as of September 2026), we give a transparent overview of the best-known tools in the area of financial planning software and show which solutions suit which requirements.
The cornerstones of financial planning
Before we come to the comparison of different financial planning software, we would first like to look at the basic building blocks of successful planning. Only if you understand which areas interact can you select the right solution for your business in a targeted way. These fields are closely linked and together they form the foundation of solid corporate management.
Liquidity and cash flow planning
Cash flow planning focuses on solvency in the short and medium term. Companies monitor their incoming and outgoing payments to make sure that sufficient liquid funds are available at all times. Precise cash flow planning helps to identify financial bottlenecks early and to counteract them strategically. This is of great importance especially for small and medium-sized companies in order to ensure operational stability.
Financial planning in the narrower sense (P&L and balance sheet planning)
While cash flow planning primarily secures solvency in the short term, financial planning in the narrower sense concentrates on managing financing and investment decisions in the medium to long term. The profit and loss account (P&L) and balance sheet planning are components of comprehensive corporate planning. The P&L sets income against expenses in order to assess the company’s performance. The balance sheet shows assets and liabilities and thus forms the basis for strategic decisions. Both instruments are important for a sustainable financial strategy.
Analysis tools: KPIs and reporting
Meaningful data is indispensable if you want to make well-founded decisions. Analysis tools support companies in evaluating important key performance indicators (KPIs) such as revenue growth, profit margins or liquidity reserves. Supplemented by professional reporting, these tools enable a structured assessment of company performance and create transparency for all decision-makers.
How modern cash flow management software supports businesses
Digital solutions are indispensable today for managing complex financial processes efficiently. Modern financial planning software helps companies monitor cash flows, plan financial developments and take well-founded decisions. The various tools set different priorities, geared specifically to the individual needs of companies.
COMMITLY, for example, takes you from plan to payment: cash flow planning with rolling forecast, scenarios and plan-actual comparison, plus invoice approval and payment in one system. Other tools place their focus more strongly on strategic financial planning or on analysis and reporting functions. These different orientations do not mean that one system is more comprehensive or better than another – rather, they serve different requirements.
In the following we would like to introduce some of the best-known tools and financial planning software in these areas. We follow the solutions presented and rated on OMR Reviews.

Which financial planning software is the best?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of the “best” financial planning software. Every company has different requirements, processes and priorities, so the ideal solution always depends on the individual circumstances. What matters is that the tool covers a company’s specific needs and fits into existing structures.
The tools have different focuses: cash flow planning, P&L and balance sheet planning, consolidation or KPIs. If what you mainly need to know is whether the money will last, you need cash flow software with bank connections and open items. If you also want to approve and pay invoices without introducing a second tool, ask exactly that — providers differ widely here.
So the rule is: the best financial planning software is the one that fits your goals, your industry and your processes. We have summarised which questions to put to every provider in ten questions for every demo.
